Organizational Culture, Innovation and Competitive Performance: A Multi-Level Dynamic Model

Abstract:

We develop an Evolution Theory model of innovation culture. It combines culture, in which informal bottom-up innovation ideas are driven by emergent interactions governed by social norms, with imperfect and noisy steering by management, which cannot monitor or control culture but only nudge it, as the norms and interactions cannot be monitored. Culture influences innovation performance and productivity of the firm and is thus relevant for the orga- nization’s competitiveness. The model integrates three levels of competition and selection, at the level of employees, of the management of the company, and of competition among companies. This approach is able to illuminate how explicit strategy co-exists with implicit bottom-up driven cultural evolution of innovation.

我们结合自下而上文化开发了一种文化进化论模型。在本模型中,创新理念既由自下而上的新兴社会规范所驱动,也会获取自上而下的激励。亦即,理念创新会获取其他雇员的认可。当企业身处竞争中时,文化为创新的产生提供了更强韧的环境。本模型整合了三个层级的竞争与选择——雇员层级、企业管理层级、多企业竞争层级。这一方法或能解决创新进化中的一些开放式问题。

Bio:

Professor Dr. Christoph H. Loch is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School (CJBS), and from 2011-2021 he served as the Director of the school. During his deanship, Judge Business School has significantly improved its teaching development, academic innovation, and social reputation. It rapidly grew from a young business school to a worldwide leader in economics and management education. Prof. Loch earned his PhD in Management from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He worked in leading firms and institutions such as Siemens, McKinsey & Company, INSEAD, Palo Alto HP Lab, and Stockholm School of Economics.

Academically, Prof. Loch’s researches focus on innovation management, project management, behavioral operations management, and etc. As a co-director of the Cambridge Center for Chinese Management, he is also dedicated to studying the management theory and practice of Chinese firms. He was identified as one of the top ten Innovation researchers worldwide in the Journal of Product Innovation Management in 2012, and he was identified as one of the top ten archers worldwide in Operations Management in the journal Decision Sciences in 2020. He started to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of Management Science on January 1, 2024.

洛赫教授1960年生于德国,1991年毕业于美国斯坦福大学商学院,获管理学博士学位。他曾在西门子、麦肯锡、欧洲工商管理学院、帕洛阿尔托惠普实验室、斯德哥尔摩经济学院等世界顶尖企业或机构任职,并于2011年至今工作于剑桥大学嘉治商学院。在他20112021年担任院长期间,剑桥大学嘉治商学院在教学发展、学术创新、社会声誉等方面大幅提升,从一所年轻商学院迅速成长为全球经济与管理教育领域的佼佼者。

在学术方面,洛赫教授的研究主要集中在创新管理、项目管理、以及行为运营管理等领域。作为剑桥大学中国管理研究中心的联席主席,他也致力于中国企业的管理理论与实践研究。他于2012年被Journal of Product Innovation Management评为创新领域的世界十大学者,于2020年被Decision Sciences评为运营管理领域的世界十大学者。洛赫教授于202411日就任Management Science主编。
